That was a relief… This was going to be hard enough without dropping our two best fighters down to my level.

Once they’d both accepted, I looked to Other. “You’re the expert. To me, this is just rock and sand.”

“That’s true, but the stone is rich in everything the Colony needs.”

Sweeter words had never been pushed into my brain by a sentient four-foot tall mushroom. If the ground hadn’t been suitable, I’d have had to rethink the whole thing. I’d had a long time to look at the material the Tunnels were made of, and it was the same stuff as here.

“Do your thing, please.”

“Happily,” Other said. “Would you all mind standing in a circle?”

I thought Lucas was going to dig his heels in, but Sabine stepped forward and so did I. Even Map followed suit, which made it hard for Lucas to hold out.

Eventually, he took his place as well.

I felt the ground against my feet, as if I weren’t wearing boots. I saw in every direction at once. I heard the grind of the wind on the stone as they fought for dominance in a war that would last eons.
